Boston is one of the oldest, largest and most cultural cities in the USA. Boston was founded on September 7, 1630, by Puritan colonists from England. Boston’s early European settlers called the area Three Mountains. They renamed the town for Boston, England because many important Pilgrim colonists came from there.
The city is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as a Greater Boston area. While the city of Boston covers 48.4 square miles (125 km2) and has 675,647 residents as of the 2020 census, the urbanization has extended well into surrounding areas and that has a more than 8.4 million people, making it one of the most populous regions in the U.S.
It’s rich history attracts many tourists, Boston’s many firsts include the United States’ first public park Boston Common, first public school and first subway system, world famous museums, stadiums and concert halls.
Boston is sometimes called a “city of neighborhoods”. The city government’s Office of Neighborhood Services has officially designated 23 neighborhood cities. Boston is bordered to the north by the cities of Cambridge, Somerville, Medford and to the northwest by Arlington and Watertown.
